As for Parton, she was just as in love, as she recalled in a post website that he had been a gentleman from the beginning. “I was surprised and delighted that while he was talking to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me),” she joked. Parton added, “He seemed genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I stood for.”
A whirlwind romance ensued, with both Parton and Dean introducing each other to their families early on, and they were soon engaged. But instead of their wedding being easy and breezy (which wouldn’t be unthinkable, considering how much in love they were), Parton’s record label tried to get them to postpone the wedding.

In the golden age of entertainment, it wasn’t entirely unthinkable that married stars would be marketed differently, so it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that when Dolly Parton planned to marry Carl Dean in the 1960s, her record label tried to stop her from doing so. “Everyone at my label – Monument Records and Fred Foster – had invested money in me and building my career, so they asked me if I would wait a year to get married,” she told CMT News (via Hello!).
In a 2012 interview with Local 3 NewsParton shared that she and Dean ultimately canceled the wedding they had planned, and that it had been incredibly difficult for his mother. “It broke her heart,” Parton recalled, especially since she had already started inviting loved ones over. There was a silver lining, however, as the couple decided to go ahead with their wedding, just in secret. “We went there the next weekend, sneaking out because we didn’t want to go anywhere near there… we thought about Ringgold because we knew you could get your driver’s license there and get married the same day,” she recalled of their first elopement attempt. However, when they learned they would have to say their vows in a courthouse, Parton changed her mind. “I said, ‘I’m not getting married in the courthouse. I’m getting married in the church,'” she recalls. Compromise: They still got their marriage license, but went back for the ceremony a few days later, this time with Parton’s mother.
Despite the rollercoaster leading up to their little ceremony, Parton said Ringgold remained a special place for her and Dean, and they tried to go there every year to celebrate their anniversary.

Dolly Parton’s Playboy interview wouldn’t be the only time she hinted at an open relationship with Carl Dean. She also hinted at it during an interview with Ladies’ Home Journal. Even with all of Dolly Parton’s comments about Carl Dean being her soulmate whom she would never leave, the couple was nonetheless plagued by more serious affair rumors, likely starting after Parton described a major heartbreak she endured as a “matter of the heart” in Ladies’ Home Journal (via Dolly on Dolly).
Although Parton never mentioned any names (in fact, in a 1991 interview with Vanity fairshe said specifically she wouldn’t ever shares any details), the man involved was long believed to be her longtime bandleader Gregg Perry. The two were exceptionally close, but parted ways during the filming of “The Best Little W***ehouse in Texas,” largely due to how difficult things were behind the scenes. The toxic work environment put enormous pressure on Perry, and Parton wrote in her autobiography: “Dolly: my life and other unfinished businessThat he eventually quit the music business altogether. About that, Parton wrote that she had mixed feelings. “I was crushed when he left, and it inspired me to write one of my favorite songs, ‘What a Heartache You Turned Out to Be,’” she revealed.
