
Laverne Cox opens up about having some clarity after the police. After previously revealing that she was seriously swooning over her MAGA-supporting cop boo for nearly four years, she realized she was “betraying” herself by being in that relationship.
During a recent appearance on The view while promoting her upcoming memoir, Transcendentalthe Emmy-nominated star reflected on her past relationship with a New York City police officer whose political beliefs sparked intense public conversations. According to The independentCox addressed the backlash she received after previously revealing she had dated a younger police officer who supported Donald Trump.
“We didn’t mean to fall in love, but we did,” Cox explained while discussing the relationship.
The Orange is the new black star said that when they first met, she was attracted to what she described as a kind and attentive partner who treated her better than anyone she had previously dated. Cox eventually discovered that he had not been completely honest about his profession and later discovered political differences that became increasingly difficult to ignore.
According to USA today, Cox explained that while she initially wanted to see him as a human being beyond his job title and political beliefs, deeper issues eventually emerged.
“People ultimately show you who they are,” she said during a television appearance.
The actress revealed that as time went on, she realized the relationship represented more than a disagreement over politics. Instead, she came to see it as a conflict of values. Although Cox said she believes people can sometimes maintain relationships despite differing political views, she ultimately concluded that this situation created fundamental differences in the way they viewed the world.
“The political preference became clear, but I already had feelings for him and I wanted to see him further as a human being,” the actress continued. “His politics and his unexamined life became apparent after the three and a half years. I thought, ‘I love him, but I love myself more.’ And by staying in this relationship, I have betrayed myself.

Cox said she was “madly in love” with the man who was 22 years her junior.
“My ex-boyfriend was 26 when we met five years ago, at the height of the pandemic. I was 48,” she says. said. “He’s a Republican MAGA voter with blonde hair and blue eyes and a police officer in New York City. We were madly in love. I didn’t develop any of these politics. I still have my own politics.”
After being inundated with criticism, Cox stressed in a continued IG video that she never adopted her former partner’s political beliefs and that throughout the relationship she continued to challenge views she disagreed with. She also emphasized that her commitment to transgender rights and progressive advocacy never wavered.
“For the people who say it’s a betrayal of my community because I fell in love with someone from a different political background, I mean, I get it,” she said in a follow-up video. “I understand, especially now, and we don’t have a relationship anymore, and I think with this current administration there are definitely lines that need to be drawn because we’re fighting for our lives in a different way than we were five years ago,” she said.
Laverne further noted that, unlike her ex, she never voted for Trump.
As she prepares to release her memoir, Cox seems focused on sharing the lessons she’s learned.
