Just four months ago, Lindsey Vonn was battling one of the most traumatic injuries of her legendary career.
Now, he’s back in the gym and showing the world that his comeback is gaining serious momentum.
The Olympic skiing icon shared an uplifting update on social media this week, posting a training video that revealed how far she’s come since the horrific accident that left her hospitalized during the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics in February.
What’s even more encouraging is that Vonn was training without the heavy brace that had become a regular part of her recovery process.
Vonn could not hide her emotion
The 41-year-old seemed delighted to be moving freely again as she performed a series of exercises designed to regain strength and stability in her surgically repaired leg.
Along with the video, Vonn expressed how meaningful the moment was after months of rehabilitation.
“The face I make when I can work out at the gym!” she wrote.
“It makes me so happy and excited that I can’t even put it into words!”
For someone who spent much of the last few months wondering how long his recovery would take, the excitement was understandable.

Training showed significant progress
The video showed Vonn performing several challenging exercises that would have seemed impossible immediately after the injury.
Exercises included ski-style lateral movements on a resistance mat, medicine ball squats on an incline platform, Bulgarian split squats and a series of pull-ups.
The training demonstrated not only better mobility but also growing confidence in his injured leg.
For elite athletes, such moments often represent important psychological victories as well as physical ones.
An accident that changed everything
Vonn’s road back began after a terrible accident during her first race at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
While competing in Italy, he crashed into a gate during a downhill race and suffered a violent accident that immediately raised concerns among medical staff.
The ski legend was left writhing in pain on the slope before being airlifted off the mountain.
Doctors later diagnosed him with a fractured tibia and ankle, injuries serious enough to threaten not only his Olympic dreams but potentially much more.
The situation became even more serious
As if the broken bones weren’t enough, Vonn’s recovery was complicated by the development of compartment syndrome.
The dangerous condition occurs when pressure builds up within muscle compartments and restricts blood flow, creating a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.
At one point, there were legitimate fears that Vonn might lose her leg.
Fortunately, emergency surgery averted the worst-case scenario.
In an emotional social media post earlier this year, Vonn credited Dr. Tom Hackett for saving her future.
“Dr. Tom Hackett saved my life,” Vonn said.
“He saved my leg from being amputated.”
It was a shocking revelation that highlighted how serious the injury really was behind the scenes.

Another chapter in a career defined by resilience
The accident was particularly heartbreaking because Vonn had already overcome enormous obstacles simply to return to Olympic competition.
The skiing superstar had previously retired from the sport before making a notable comeback attempt.
He entered the Olympics after undergoing a partial knee replacement and was reportedly competing despite having a torn ACL in his left knee.
For many athletes, those circumstances alone would have been enough to end a career.
For Vonn, they became another challenge to overcome.
Slowly returning to normal life
The recovery process has developed step by step.
In late April, Vonn was spotted navigating through Los Angeles International Airport in a wheelchair.
Just a few weeks later, she made a glamorous appearance at the Met Gala, marking the first time many fans saw her walk publicly without crutches.
Each milestone has represented another small victory in what she has repeatedly described as the toughest rehabilitation of her life.
Vonn previously called the injury “the most extreme, painful and challenging setback” she has ever experienced.
Considering his long history of injuries throughout his ski career, that’s saying a lot.
Questions remain about his future
While Vonn’s recovery continues to impress, her long-term future in competitive skiing remains uncertain.
The Olympic champion has consistently refused to rule out another comeback and has rejected suggestions that the injury should force her to retire.
For now, his attention remains focused on healing and regaining strength.
Given his track record, few people would be willing to bet against him.
Life away from the slopes
During her rehabilitation, Vonn has also taken her attention away from the sport.
In recent months there has been growing speculation about a possible relationship with French skier Matthew Bailet.
The two have been seen together on several occasions, including outings in New York City and a Broadway performance of “The Outsiders.”
While neither of them have publicly addressed the rumors, the sightings have generated a lot of discussion among fans.

If there’s one athlete who has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to comebacks, it’s Lindsey Vonn.
Throughout his career, he has repeatedly returned from injuries that would have ended most athletes’ careers, and this latest recovery already appears to be ahead of schedule. The fact that he is returning to training without a brace just four months after a potentially life-altering injury is notable.
Whether she returns to skiing competitively or not, Vonn continues to demonstrate why she is considered one of the toughest athletes of her generation.
