In a post shared on social truth, Trump defended the administration’s efforts to restore and beautify Washington, D.C., while claiming that the iconic landmark had recently come under attack by people seeking to damage the project.
“We have cleaned, renovated and beautified more than 45 monuments and memorials, 28 statues and 22 fountains in Washington, DC,” Trump wrote. “However, we have had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool, which is located between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.”
Trump alleged that vandals damaged the newly installed grass surrounding the pool and attempted to destroy parts of its newly renovated interior.
Multimillion-dollar renovation faces unexpected problems
The controversy comes after Trump ordered an estimated $15 million renovation to the Reflecting Pool ahead of America’s upcoming 250th birthday celebrations.
The project was reportedly intended to address long-standing maintenance issues, including persistent algae growth that had turned the water an unattractive shade of green. Instead, new problems quickly arose once the work was completed.
Reports of The New York Times They described sections of the pool liner breaking away from the bottom, leaving visible patches and chunks of material floating in the water. The deterioration raised questions about whether the renovation itself was successful, and some visitors expressed frustration at the state of the monument.

Addressing current issues, Trump also took aim at ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl. “ABC light reporter Jonathan Karl was seen reaching into the pool and attempting to tear the rubber off the surface,” Trump alleged, although he provided no evidence to support the allegation.
He also claimed that chemicals had been used to damage parts of the project, although officials have not publicly identified any suspects or released information confirming that vandalism is the cause of the deterioration.
Democratic Senator Calls Reflecting Pool Project a ‘Shameful Waste’
The controversy has also drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who question how a multimillion-dollar renovation could be experiencing problems so soon after its completion. Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley criticized the project in a post on X, accusing the administration of wasting taxpayer money.
“You can’t make this up: After criticizing waste, fraud and abuse, the Trump administration spent $14 million renovating a reflecting pool that is now peeling and overgrown with algae,” Merkley wrote. “I am pushing for answers to this shameful waste of resources.”
The criticism comes as questions continue to arise about whether the pool’s deterioration is due to vandalism, construction issues or ongoing environmental challenges. Although visible algae growth has been documented in and around the pool, the Department of the Interior has downplayed the problem, dismissing concerns even as Washington, D.C.’s hot, humid summer weather creates ideal conditions for algae to spread.
Critics call the project a “complete failure”
As debate continues over what caused the damage, some observers have wondered whether the renovation itself is to blame. “They’ve been here for days,” said food delivery driver Alex Hobe. The New York Times as he watched repair crews working near the site. From his perspective, the costly restoration effort was “a complete failure.”
Despite the criticism, Trump insisted the situation is being addressed and said much of the algae problem has now been resolved. “The algae have disappeared by 75% and soon the situation will be completely resolved,” he wrote, adding that the damaged areas would be repaired in the coming days.
President Donald Trump further alleged that “radical left lunatics” were likely responsible for the damage, although he provided no evidence linking any individual or group to the reported vandalism.
