He bbc has reported that George met the man online before traveling to Dubai to meet him. She had described her first trip as perfect, where she was having “the time of my life.” However, circumstances reportedly changed drastically during his second visit. According to George, her boyfriend became controlling and abusive.
According to the alleged attacker’s mother, Thereza George, Brooke George called her in a “panicked state” after the alleged abuse. She said: “When I spoke to Brooke immediately after the incident, she was absolutely terrified. She was crying uncontrollably. I could see that one of her eyes was very swollen and starting to close.”
The BBC reports that friends booked her on a flight back to the UK, but she returned to the apartment to collect her passport before the incident occurred.
According to George, she grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the man in self-defense. She was later arrested at Dubai airport and charged with murder.
Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai, which is helping George, has said George’s case should be treated as one of domestic abuse and not relegated to the firing squad. He said: “We call for Brooke to be released on bail pending the outcome of the investigation. The UAE has a well-documented history of criminalizing and re-victimizing women who report violence.”
Stirling has said openly that George’s case raises serious questions about domestic violence against women and their right to self-defence, especially for British citizens detained abroad.
