Austin Metcalf’s father says he never received an apology or any expression of remorse from Karmelo Anthony’s family after the fatal stabbing who took the life of his son.
During an appearance on a Fox News show, Jeff Metcalf reflected on the fallout from the case and the public debate surrounding it, particularly criticism that the trial and verdict were influenced by race.
Anthony, who was convicted of Metcalf’s murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison earlier this month, is now preparing to appeal the conviction with the help of a newly formed legal team.
Metcalf says there was never any contact
According to Jeff Metcalf, he hoped there would eventually be some level of responsibility or recognition from Anthony’s family.
Instead, he says that never happened.
When asked if he had ever spoken directly to Anthony’s family, Metcalf responded no and said he never received an apology or any expression of remorse.
“I was hoping for maybe some accountability and some remorse,” he said. “Neither of them were shown.”
Metcalf also claimed that Anthony’s family was not present during the sentencing phase of the trial or for victim impact statements delivered afterwards.
Frustration over the racial narrative
Metcalf reiterated that he never wanted the case to be framed from a racial perspective.
Anthony is black and Metcalf was white, and the case generated significant attention online as several commentators debated whether race influenced public reactions, media coverage and, ultimately, the verdict.
Metcalf said he asked people from the beginning not to talk about race or politics.
Instead, he believes those issues became central topics of conversation despite the facts presented during the trial.
He specifically pointed to public comments from elected officials and media personalities who questioned the outcome of the case or suggested Anthony did not receive a fair trial.

Self-defense claim ended in trial
The case arose from a fatal confrontation at a Texas high school track meet in April 2025.
Prosecutors argued that Anthony stabbed Metcalf during an altercation after he was asked to leave the team store area.
Anthony maintained that he acted in self-defense.
Jurors ultimately rejected that defense and returned a guilty verdict for murder.
The conviction resulted in a 35-year prison sentence.

Appeal effort already underway
Although the trial phase has ended, the legal fight continues.
A coalition supporting Anthony announced Monday that a new group of appellate, civil rights and criminal defense attorneys will review the case and file all available appeals.
The attorneys said their goal is to determine whether any legal errors occurred during the proceedings and ensure that all viable appeal issues are fully explored.
The team emphasized that the appeals process exists to evaluate whether the trial was conducted properly under the law, not to retry the case itself.

The trial may be over, but the emotions surrounding the case remain intense. Jeff Metcalf’s comments highlight the lasting pain experienced by families on both sides of a tragedy that forever changed many lives. As Anthony’s new legal team begins the appeal process, the public conversation surrounding the case is unlikely to fade anytime soon, especially given debates over race, self-defense and the handling of the trial that continue to divide opinion.
