The Gaudreau family has welcomed a new happy chapter nearly a year after enduring an unimaginable tragedy.
Katie Gaudreau-Joyce, sister of late hockey brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, announced the birth of her son and revealed that she chose a name that pays tribute to one of her beloved brothers.
Baby pays tribute to Matthew Gaudreau
Katie and her husband, Devin Joyce, welcomed their son on June 20 and shared the news on Instagram.
The couple named their newborn Matthew Guy Joyce, after Katie’s late brother Matthew.
Alongside the photos featuring her son, Katie wrote: “The moment our hearts became bigger than we ever imagined. Welcome to the world sweet boy.”
Family continues to honor Johnny and Matthew
The birth comes less than a year after the devastating loss of Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Gaudreau.
The brothers died after being hit by an alleged drunk driver while bicycling in New Jersey on the eve of Katie’s wedding.
Following the tragedy, Katie postponed her wedding before marrying Devin Joyce in July 2025.
A growing family after heartbreak
Both Johnny and Matthew left behind young families.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Meredith, daughter Noa, and son Johnny Jr. Meredith later welcomed the couple’s son, Carter.
Matthew’s wife, Madeline, also gave birth to his son, Tripp, after his passing.
Katie’s decision to name her son Matthew adds another heartfelt tribute as the family continues to celebrate new life while honoring those they lost.

The criminal case is still ongoing
The man accused of causing the crash, Sean Higgins, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including aggravated manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter.
The case has not yet gone to trial.
