Are Nike socks losing quality?

When they give you socks from an established brand like Nikeyou wait quality. Unfortunately, as explained in a viral video, a TikToker (@ryguyactive) was left completely disappointed for your festive gift.

Holding a black sock in hand, the TikToker said, “Can someone at Nike tell me what’s going on with all you socks?”

“I bought a bunch of your socks in 2015 and they lasted me until last Christmas,” he continued. “I threw away everything of mine.”

He added: “I finally ripped out all the holes. Finally they all got ruined, so I threw them all away.”

Additionally, he continued, “I ordered socks for Christmas, and every single pair of my socks for Christmas has the exact same hole in the heel.”

Also, as he said this, he was carrying a black Nike sock in his hand and drew attention to the gaping hole in the heel of the sock.

“Every one of my socks,” he added.

“You want a billion dollars for a pair of socks? I bit the bullet and that’s all I asked for Christmas, and it’s June, and they’re all… they’re all destroyed. This is ridiculous. This is… the drop is crazy.”

The video has garnered 1.1 million views. BroBible reached out to the TikToker via TikTok direct message and Nike via email.

Did people agree with him?

This wouldn’t be the first time Nike has had a design flaw—A recent example is the World Cup shirt. However, most commenters sympathized with the TikToker.

“Does anyone remember that heels and toes used to be thicker?” one asked.

“It’s the invention…” explained a second. “Before they were 100% cotton and now most are polyester.”

“Okay,” added a third. “I thought it was just us!”

While a fourth admitted: “Ohhh I owe my son an apology, I thought he was rubbing his heels!!!”

And a fifth chimed in: “Same goes for my kids’ socks. I’m done buying Nike socks.”

On the other hand, there were the commentators who had reservations.

“Nothing and I mean nothing is made to last and that’s on purpose,” said a sixth. “More money, more waste.”

Why do Nike socks still have holes?

In addition to those in the comments with the same problem, there is also a Redditor describing an identical problem.

In a post from two years ago on r/slightly irritating subreddit, The user shared a photo of their Nike socks lined up, all with the exact same hole in the heel.

“Same hole in each of my Nike socks,” he wrote.

One Reddit user offered a solution, writing: “I switched to Darn Tough a few years ago. They’re expensive per pair, but they’re guaranteed for life. They’ll replace any sock you wear forever.”

Another joked: “Rub some lotion on those heels.”

While a third shared: “Do you wear crocs? I notice the few times I wear them with socks they end up with holes in the heels.”

Less helpfully, a fourth commented: “No offense, but that’s what you get for buying by brand and not quality.”

While a fifth theorized about a different problem: “I have the same problem, I don’t know the reason but my theory is that I put too much candy on my feet and when they get wet and I’m in my safety work shoes for 9 hours it rubs on the sock and makes a hole. Another theory is that the candy when it dries makes the sock hard so it’s easier to make a hole while walking.”

In response to this, the original Redditor said: “My feet sweat a lot too so maybe that’s the problem.”

At least for the Redditor, it seems like they could benefit from waterproof socks—But when it comes to the problem of holes, the solution seems less clear.
