CBS’ misleading cancellation officially marks the end of an era for sitcoms

One of the most important cancellations for C.B.S.and without a doubt the one with the biggest twist, ends an era for television. Now that the Television cycle 2025-2026 is finished, broadcasters are eagerly awaiting what’s next for their legacy shows, as well as setting up their next debuts. However, not all shows will return, which is part of the networks’ effort to make sure their portfolios are as fresh as possible. Some cancellations, however, hurt more than others.

CBS canceled several series in recent years. The network is not new to the reaction that comes with canceling shows, dealing with fans of NCIS: Hawaii and Blue Bloods, who were understandably upset about the end of their pet projects. That said, CBS’s cancellation of The Neighborhood was particularly frustrating for one reason. When it was renewed for its eighth and final season, the idea was that it would somehow continue the Malcolm and Marty spinoff, which was even set up for the season 7 finale. However, just a couple of months later, the project was considered dead.

Marty and Malcolm’s spin-off no longer moving forward means that The Neighborhood The CBS franchise is now over, which also marks the end of an era for the network’s sitcoms. The series directed by Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield was the last remaining comedy of the 2010s and premiered in 2018. Other shows in the same genre that debuted around the same time, such as young sheldon and the connersboth have concluded their careers in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Now that The Neighborhood Also retired, all remaining comedies in traditional streaming began in the 2020s.

The Neighborhood It debuted with a fairly simple premise. Its events began when the Midwest Johnsons moved into the house next door to the Butlers in Pasadena, leading to an eight-season run filled with character development and community building. It resulted in one of CBS’s most underrated hits, as The Neighborhood barely generated as much buzz as The Big Bang Theory franchise or even Ghosts. Despite that, it was a constant presence in his portfolio for almost a decade.

Although there is no shortage of comedies on television networks right now, The Neighborhood It was specifically different and special for a couple of reasons. First, it went beyond the traditional family-oriented series, as it united the Butlers and Johnsons into a larger clan. They both had their respective stories, but the crux of each episode was how they trusted each other in times of need, which is a unique take on the found family trope. Secondly, it was the only comedy that addressed racial issues in a realistic setting.

Ahead of its finales, CBS has officially unveiled its confirmed schedule for fall 2026, which is a mix of established franchises and new offerings.

For what it’s worth, The NeighborhoodThe other spin-off, Crutchhas had its first season, although not in C.B.S.. Instead, the Tracy Morgan-directed series launched on Paramount+. There’s no word yet on whether it will return for a second year, but if it does, maybe it can bring back some characters from the flagship. Otherwise, an update on how Marty and Malcolm are doing would suffice.
