A botched play in Sunday’s New York Yankees game gives us a chance to take a look at current Polymarket odds.
In the first inning of the game against the Cincinnatti Reds, the current best team in the American League seemed to have turned an excellent double play, but no outs were called.

The Reds’ Blake Dunn was on first base with JJ Bleday at bat. Bleday hit a liner straight up the middle and right to Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe. The infielder latched onto the ball, stepped on second base as a precaution, and then threw the ball to first to throw out Dunn, who didn’t have time to retreat to first base in time.
The YES Network announcers called the lucky moment a double play, with Yankees great Paul O’Neill going on a rant about “the breaks in the game.” However, the home plate umpire quickly called the catcher’s interference on the play.

Yankees catcher Austin Wells. Who just left IL? — stuck his glove too far in front of him and Bleday’s bat collided with it. Under MLB rules, the play is dead when that contact is made and the batter takes first base.
“What a turn of events here,” O’Neill quickly said once he realized Wells blew the double play. Michael Kay described the moment as “a big blow for the Yankees” that put rookie starting pitcher Elmer Rodriguez in a “difficult situation.”

A big mistake like this would apparently scare some. bettors at Polymarket. The odds were already fairly even before the game began, due to Rodriguez’s unexpected insertion into the Bronx Bombers’ rotation.

It took scoring plays for Polymarket odds to change drastically. A solo home run by New York first baseman Ben Rice increased the team’s winning odds by as much as 70%. However, Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson hit a 3-run home run in the fourth inning, putting the Ohio-based team ahead. As of press time, Polymarket gives the Reds a 68% chance of winning the game, which is currently in the fifth inning.
Even if the Yankees don’t win on Sunday, Polymarket still believes They will win the American League East and defeat every other American League team in the playoffs. (The Dodgers are still the favorites to win the World Series, however.)
