Is there anything better than the first shower on the first day of holiday? The room steams up, and then you slide into a thick layer bathrobe. The whole thing feels restorative and restrained luxurious. That is until you find yourself defeated by unreliable hardware.
This is exactly the position one man found himself in on the first day of his Virgin Voyages cruise. It was a steamy situation that quickly turned around.
A video of the situation was posted to TikTok by traveler (and new Florida resident) Maddie (@madisonsocials).
The saxophones are getting louder
Few things make you feel more vulnerable than sitting in your finery after a shower and waiting for strangers to save you. If you are on a cruise Being on a ship, like Maddie and her friend, can also feel incredibly claustrophobic. In the video, which has been viewed more than 22,000 times, an unknown man’s hand turns a door lock back and forth.
The text of the video explains what’s going on: “POV, it’s the first morning of your cruise. You just took a hot, steamy shower. But then the door won’t open. You’re stuck in a cramped, TINY bathroom for 45 minutes until maintenance has to break down the door (skull emoji).”
Meanwhile, the soundtrack is the viral clip of saxophones getting louder and louder.
In an email to BroBible, Maddie confirmed that it took 45 minutes for the crew to respond. But after that it all went smoothly. “It was a crazy start to our cruise trip, (but) overall the cruise was quite fun!”
Solo travel means solo problem solving
Luckily, Maddie was there to help by raising the alarm. But this situation does raise the question of what an individual traveler would do if stuck in such a situation. The simple solution would apparently be to leave the bathroom door open. But according to a thread about solo cruising forumthere are cruisers that have to close their doors.
Several travelers said they were able to escape from locked bathrooms on cruise ships with a combination of luck and screaming. Traveler Lucy R. booked a room in a quieter part of her cruise ship. She got stuck in the bathroom and tried in vain to get out, even using a garbage can as a battering ram. “What I’ve learned is not to lock my bathroom door on any cruise ship. I’ve also learned to NEVER book a cabin that is too isolated, where people can’t hear me screaming for help,” she wrote.
Another traveler finally sounded the emergency alarm when they ended up in a toilet on a deck where few people frequented. But it’s the traveler that PerfectlyPerth has on hand and perhaps the easiest solution: “Why not just grab a cheap rubber door stop?” That way, instead of having to deal with fiddly locks for change, you simply clamp the door stop under the door to keep it securely closed.
Do you have to take your phone everywhere?
Another one video confirms that Maddie’s companion eventually emerged from the shower. But that doesn’t seem to reassure the internet.
“This is why I always take my phone everywhere,” says Rachel (@rachellunney).
“Imagine leaving your phone on the bed, lol,” said Riley Null (@rileynull).
Then, Manda Nori (@duhmanduh31) pondered how she would handle it, writing, “I would literally have to take another shower afterward. I would work up a sweat if I was stuck in a tiny sauna.”
And Mellennial (@meleason09) dropped a punny: “New fear unlocked.”
