Just in time for that Father’s Daya new survey asked Americans to name the best movie dads of all time — and the results include everything from devoted family men to action heroes and even a notorious mob boss.
This is evident from a study conducted by Rokusome of film history’s most beloved dads continue to resonate with audiences decades after they first appeared on screen.
While the list includes some expected choices, it also proves that there is no one blueprint for what makes a great movie dad.
America’s Favorite Movie Dads
According to Roku’s research, these are America’s best movie dads:
- Daniel Hillard (Mrs. Doubtfire)
- George Banks (Father of the bride)
- Atticus finch (Killing a mockingbird)
- Vito Corleone (The godfather)
- Bryan Mills (Taken)

Why these dads still stand out
Leading the list is Daniel Hillard, Robin Williams’ unforgettable character Mrs. Doubtfire.
Hillard remains one of the most beloved fathers in film history thanks to the extraordinary efforts he made to spend time with his children.
George Banks, played by Steve Martinby Father of the Bride, also earned a spot thanks to his relatable struggles as a father learning to let go as his daughter grew up.

Meanwhile, Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) by Killing a mockingbird is still considered one of the most admirable fathers ever portrayed on screen, thanks to his unwavering sense of justice, integrity and compassion.
Not your typical movie dads
The list also includes a few more unconventional choices.
Vito Corleone, famously played by Marlon Brandoby The godfather, was recognized for his fierce loyalty to his family, even though his profession made him a less than traditional role model.
Bryan Mills out Taken rounds out the list. Liam Neeson‘s character famously used his “very specific skills” to save his daughter, cementing his place as one of the most memorable action movie dads ever.

The dads on Roku’s list couldn’t be more different, but they all have one thing in common: a willingness to do whatever it takes for their children.
