The first film came out 28 years ago and fans are already excited for the sequel
Lisa Cuerda and Mira Sorvino are set to reprise their roles in the long-awaited sequel to 1997. comedy Romy and Michelle’s high school reunion.
The cult classic followed best friends Romy White and Michelle Weinberger as they realized they weren’t popular during their time in school. When he returned to his hometown for a school reunion he decided to tell an elaborate lie about his success in order to impress his former classmates.
The original film also starred comedian Janeane Garofalo and the Scots star alan cummingWhile Justin Theroux, known for his roles in Fallout and American Psycho, made a memorable cameo role.
Excitement over the sequel was confirmed this week when 20th century studios Nearly three decades after the release of the first film, it was announced that production was officially underway.
The studio shared a photo on Instagram, which shows Lisa and Mira sitting back in director’s chairs in costumes with the words Romi & Michelle 2 written on them.
The photo was captioned: “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! Romy & Michelle sequel now in production.” Mira immediately took to the comments section, writing: “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited’!”
Fans immediately took to social media to discuss the sequel, with many expressing their excitement for the attractive blonde’s return to screens. On X, as it is formally known on Twitter, one fan wrote: “Oh I’m throwing the best watch party for this.”
While another posted: “OMFG!!!!!!!!! Yessssss!!! This is one of my favorite movies of all time!!!” Others were excited to see if Allen would return to his role, as one fan said: “Can’t wait for Allen Cumming to reprise his role as Sandy Frink!”
Meanwhile another fan expressed surprise, writing: “2026 wasn’t on my bingo card for a Romy and Michelle reunion, but here we are and I’m so ready.”
A follow-up to the fan-favorite comedy has been discussed for years. In 2022, Lisa and Mira delighted fans when they reunited at the Screen Actors Guild Awards to mark the film’s 25th anniversary.

The pair paid homage to their iconic characters by wearing coordinated pink and blue suits that resembled the memorable outfits worn by Romy and Michelle in the film. During his appearance, he got back into character when he presented an award.
“You look very beautiful,” Mira said to Lisa, “I know, thank you. Of course you are beautiful too. Do you think this is the most beautiful picture you have ever seen at an awards ceremony?”
Mira replied: “I just realized it; we’re wearing great outfits and presenting great outfits at the same time.”
The two also pull out a stack of Post-It notes, referencing one of the film’s most memorable jokes, in which Romy and Michelle falsely claim to have invented the sticky note in an attempt to impress their former classmates.
