The Cannes Film Festival is perhaps ‘the most prestigious film gathering in the world’ websitebut it has also become a place where celebrities can show off their most daring fashions. Well, within reason. The 12-day festival has a fairly strict dress code. According to Vanity fairorganizers generally require all attendees to dress for a black tie event, but in 2025 they went a step further by listing prohibited clothing. Unsurprisingly, nude dresses topped the list, but so did “overly voluminous silhouettes or trains” and sneakers. The rules also stated that anyone outside the strict parameters of the festival would be denied entry.
Of course, celebrities are notorious rule breakers, so they’re always pushing the boundaries, even in Cannes. Often their risks pay off and they are rewarded with a week of rave reviews and probably a few meetings about future brand partnerships with an exclusive fashion house. But even stars can be wrong. The worst dressed celebrities at the 2024 cannes film festival know this all too well, and the worst offenders of 2026 have recently joined them. So without further ado, here we are the worst fashion flops of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
Diane Kruger should have left her cape at home
Diane Kruger’s look at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival was a disappointment because she almost have a good time. The base – a gold, asymmetrical dress with an embossed floral pattern – was not only aesthetically pleasing, but also flattering. The outfit also appeared to adhere to the festival’s strict clothing guidelines. However, the actor and model paired the dress with a dramatic green cape, bringing the outfit down several points – all the way to the forest floor. Unfortunately, even her cute bow heels couldn’t save the special ensemble.
Heidi Klum looked bridal chic
Heidi Klum walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in striking numbers. The top half consisted of a strapless corset with a sweetheart neckline, while the bottom consisted of a floor-length skirt. The base of the dress was nude, covered in intricate gold stitching. Like Diane Kruger, Klum stopped at the accessories closet and donned a white, puffy opera coat. Unfortunately, the model gave more blushing bride than film festival participant, which isn’t surprising considering the dress was created by famed bridal gown designer Monique Lhuillier.
Araya A. Hargate looked ready for the ball
Araya A. Hargate also seems to have her wires crossed in Cannes. The beloved actor walked the red carpet in a blue, off-the-shoulder satin dress. It featured a large bow on her back and a hint of a train (which Cannes clearly found acceptable). And while the gorgeous blue number suits Hargate like a… gloveher sparkling floral brooch and curly updo certainly pushed what could have been a simple, elegant festival look into prom territory.
Kristen Stewart almost disappeared on the red carpet
Fashion lovers have always been divided over whether or not celebs should wear red on the red carpet. The most obvious reason is the fact that the carpet usually swallows them up, leading to some pretty unremarkable snaps. However, many celebrities, such as actor Simone Ashley, who covered the same festival in a red dress, have proven that this is not a hard and fast rule. Sadly, this wasn’t the case for actor Kristen Stewart, who wore a red dress with a dazzling black pattern that did little to make her stand out against the overwhelming carpet.
Tilda Swinton was frozen in the spring
Tilda Swinton is known for embracing bold patterns on the red carpet, and her look for the Cannes Film Festival was no different. Unfortunately, the actor may have taken too big a leap at the 2026 event. As you can see, Swinton entered the festival in an ombre pantsuit that started dark blue at the top and ended in silvery blue/white. And while that contrast was distracting enough, it didn’t help that the suit’s pattern resembled icicles, which seemed extra out of place for an event in late May.
Lisa Rinna’s look was frustrating
Lisa Rinna, who knows a thing or two about inappropriate looksproved that having the most memorable look isn’t always a good thing. The reality star walked the Cannes red carpet in a shiny, multi-colored dress with spiky accents that probably would have been better suited for an after-party. It didn’t help that the aging brunette paired the dress with an overly teased, bleach-blonde bob, making it hard to pinpoint exactly. Where to look.
