If you ever doubted that Oprah Winfrey was a good and loyal friend, this story will dispel that notion:
More than a decade after Whitney Houston’s tragic death, Oprah shared a heartbreaking story the public never knew about.
During an appearance at the Cannes Lions Festival this week, Oprah recalled a frightening moment from Houston’s last visit oprah winfrey show In 2009.
According to the Queen of Daytime Talk, Whitney had already completed a powerful interview discussing her struggle with addiction and her hopes for the future.
But when it came time for the singer to perform, things turned troublesome.
Oprah revealed that Houston was quiet when they talked backstage before the interview.
However, by the time she returned to the stage to sing, Oprah says everything had changed.
Oprah recalled, “I did my first interview with her when we went backstage and I asked her about her intentions, she was very candid.”
“But the day she came to my show to perform in front of the audience, she wasn’t there and she fell off the stage.”
This revelation stunned the audience at Cannes, as the incident was never reported at the time and remained a closely guarded secret for almost 17 years.
Oprah explained that she immediately feared what would happen if photos or video of the fall became public.
Houston was attempting a comeback at the time while promoting her album i see you and openly discussed his past struggles with substance abuse.
Oprah said, “I knew that if the story came out that she had fallen off the stage, it would destroy her completely.”
Despite the fact that viewers had cameras and could easily share photos, Oprah says she personally appealed to them not to do so.
He said, “Even though the audience was there and the audience had cameras, I urged them not to put those pictures because it would ruin their lives, and they didn’t do that.”
Oprah said she doubted such a request would be honored in today’s social media landscape.
“That won’t happen today, I can tell you that,” she said.
Yes, the world is a very different place in 2026, and we mostly mean that in a bad way.
These days, footage of Whitney’s stumble would almost certainly have gone online, and the comments section would have instantly devolved into the most vile culture war nonsense.
Oprah’s compassion toward her troubled friend reminds us all of a time when Americans were generally far more empathetic than they are today — a time to which we can hopefully return someday soon.
