Channel 5’s upcoming new drama follows a group of friends who uncover a horrifying secret
An “entertaining” new drama starring line of dutyJason Watkins and grantchesterTessa Peake-Jones to be broadcast channel 5.
The show, whose working title is Last Resort, is billed as a “deceptively dark tale of rural life” and focuses on a group of friends “pushed into the darkness of a quaint seaside village”. wales online.
The story follows retired librarian Gail (Caroline Quentin), her sister Joy (Niamh Cusack), who is battling early-stage dementia, and long-time friends Dee (Tessa) and Charlie (Jason) as they set out on holiday for Joy’s final bucket list experience.
A synopsis reads: “But when tragedy strikes the idyllic vacation town, the police immediately call it an accident. However, the group is convinced it is murder and set out to prove it.”
The partners begin their own investigation, recruiting Joey’s daughter Kate (Bronagh Waugh) to assist, and soon find themselves encountering DI Simon Lund, played by John Hannah.
“As old crimes resurface and dark patterns emerge, the group of friends discover that this seemingly idyllic resort town – with its beach walks, pub lunches and good-natured fights – hides something even more sinister,” the synopsis continues.
“Together they must solve a devastating mystery and unearth a killer who haunts this close-knit coastal community and beyond.”
The series – created by Purnell Media with Peer Pressure and StudioCanal – is currently in production, with the cast also including The Hardacres’ Kathy Belton, Little Disasters’ Chizzi Akudolu and Woman in the Wall and Midsomer Murders’ Geff Francis.
Caroline said: “I’m thrilled to be on screen with two of my long-time favorite actors, Tessa Peake-Jones and Jason Watkins. With the added joy of Bronagh, Niamh and this fantastic cast, it’s an unstoppable team!
“Purnell is producing the most exciting play at the moment, so it’s worth a look.”
The actress described The Last Resort as “emotional, funny and terrifying”, before saying: “It’s quite a ride!”
Channel 5’s Deputy Chief Content Officer Sebastian Cardwell commented: “Last Resort has lots of twists and turns! Purnell Media and Peer Pressure are fantastic partners, and with this caliber of talent, Last Resort is a great addition to 5’s acclaimed drama slate.”
Samuel Kisses, founder of production firm Purnell Media and executive producer, described Last Resort as “a gripping mystery with strong international commercial potential and a story that will keep audiences guessing right to the end”.
The Last Resort is due to air on Channel 5 in 2027
