More than two years after his abrupt departure from ESPN, the former sports center Host Max McGee is finally telling his side of the story.
In a video posted to Instagram, McGee spoke publicly for the first time about the circumstances surrounding his dismissal from the network in 2024, saying he still doesn’t fully understand why he lost what he once considered his dream job.
While he acknowledged that an internal investigation preceded his firing, McGee said he never received enough information to fully understand the complaint or the reasoning behind ESPN’s decision.
“I can only tell you what I know.”
McGee opened the video by addressing questions he has received since leaving ESPN.
“People have asked me since then what happened,” he said. “The honest answer is that I can only tell you what I know.”
According to McGee, he repeatedly sought clarification during the investigation, but was left with more uncertainty than answers.
“I was never provided with the specific details of the complaint that ultimately led to that decision,” he said. “I asked questions, looked for answers, and came out of that process with more uncertainty than clarity.”
McGee did not provide additional details about the investigation itself, but made clear that he did not agree with the outcome.

Dream job ended abruptly
McGee joined ESPN in 2022 after leaving a CBS affiliate in Baltimore, jumping at the opportunity to host sports center the realization of a lifelong dream.
After years of working his way up local television, he finally made it to one of the biggest stages in sports broadcasting.
That opportunity ended less than two years later.
In 2024, The Athletic reported that ESPN had fired McGee after the company received a complaint from a female employee.
The report appeared as part of a larger story examining the departure of former ESPN executive Lee Fitting.
At the time, McGee declined to comment publicly, saying he had been advised not to discuss the matter.
Why did you remain silent?
McGee explained that he intentionally remained silent because he wasn’t sure what he was legally or professionally allowed to say.
He said remaining silent seemed like a responsible decision, although it became increasingly difficult as speculation continued.
“I’ve kept quiet for the last two years because I was trying to do what I thought was right,” McGee said.
However, he eventually felt that others had begun to tell his story for him.
That realization ultimately prompted him to post the video.
Life after ESPN
McGee described the emotional toll the layoff took on his career and personal life.
“What made it difficult was that this wasn’t just a job,” he said. “This was something I spent years working on. Thousands of hours on television… Suddenly, it was gone.”
He revealed that after losing his position at ESPN, he returned home and worked as an Uber driver while trying to rebuild his career.
He also described repeated interviews for unsuccessful broadcasting jobs.
“I still don’t fully understand all the reasons behind it,” McGee said. “And that uncertainty has been one of the most difficult parts of the last two years.”
She admitted to experiencing anger, shame, disappointment and moments when she wondered if she would ever work in television again.
Looking to the future
Although McGee said he still disagrees with the outcome of ESPN’s investigation, he acknowledged that he may never receive the closure he hoped for.
Instead, he said he has shifted his focus toward creating new opportunities.
“I’m still here,” McGee said. “I keep creating, I keep interviewing, I keep betting on myself.”
He ended his message by emphasizing that his career is far from over.
“You don’t have to agree with me… This is not the end of my story. It’s just a chapter.”
