Another said: “By next week it’ll all be over, and then we’ll go straight to complaining that it’s so cold,” as someone else posted: “FFS just go to Argos and buy a fan.”

Another contributed, “I never moan about the heat. I just dress and act accordingly.” “Oh no we are all ruined,” another wrote, as one viewer said: “This program is a joke, it’s summer, it goes on for 2 weeks and then goes away, do you think we are all idiots that we need warnings about summer.”

Another defended meteorologist Laura, saying: “Laura is saving lives.”

Laura also hit back at the criticism during a moment on Good Morning Britain, saying: “I understand a lot of people say, ‘You’re just going to party, it’s just the hot weather,’ but we’re talking about records we’ve never reached.

“Temperatures that we have never experienced before. So it’s hard to imagine what the impact of the day is going to be because we have never experienced what we are going to see over the next three days.”

Ranveer had previously asked Laura: “In a way you were hoping it would never come and now it’s here. Am I being destructive, am I being dramatic? Am I being Hollywood about it?”

Laura replied: “I think the thing is, firstly, we have a rare red extreme heat warning with our Met Office. It’s only the second time it’s been issued.”

She added: “They are very rare because we know that when we issue them, we mean that people will lose their lives, that there will be deaths and the Met Office issues them with a heavy heart, knowing that that will be the case, and we say it with a heavy heart.

“Just to say that only half the world has early warnings, half the world may not be warm when extreme weather occurs, the fact that we have warnings to tell people to change their travel plans and schools means we are already saving lives by doing that.

“As a junior forecaster I was taught to never predict a record because they stick around so long for some reason.” He added, “We are breaking and destroying records.”
