‘Our show is not science fiction’: Showrunners of ‘The Way Home’ reveal why explaining the origins of the time-traveling pond was never in their plans

THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE WAY HOME SERIES FINALE!The series finale of The way home answered some of the show’s most burning questions, but one thing wasn’t revealed: the origin of the pond that allows the Landry family to travel through time. The showrunners, the mother-daughter duo of Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke, now reveal that this was their choice. By means of The way homethe Landry family members, sometimes accompanied by their friends, could travel back in time to different eras, encounter their loved ones and often trigger events that directly affected their current lives.

The way home came to a satisfying conclusion in the series finale, revealing KC Goodwin’s (Vaughan Murrae) true identity as Jacob Landry (Spencer MacPherson) and Abby Goodwin’s (Holly Deveaux) child, and the shocking truth that Tessa Cooper (Megan Follows) survived the explosion in the Lingermore tunnelswhile Fern Landry’s (Bianca Melchior) love, Cliff Kane (Dan Jeannotte), perished.

Additionally, Jacob and Abby got married, Kat Landry (Chyler Leigh) and Elliot Augustine (Evan Williams) got engaged, Alice Dhawan (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) and Max Goodwin (Dale Whibley) kissed, and Del Landry (Andie MacDowell) got closure with her late husband, Colton Landry (Jefferson Brown), by traveling with him for another five minutes to 1999, allowing her to move forward in her new relationship with Sam. Bishop (Rob Stewart). The final scene of The way home showed Alice and Kat jumping into the pond together, although fans will never know where (or, more accurately, when) they ended up.

Although The way home The series finale answered many questions, leaving fans hoping for the pond’s origin story wondering how the mysterious and magical body of water came to be. Now Conkie and Clarke explain why they never intended to tell that story.

Although the premise of The way home was based on time travel, in an interview with TV lineClarke shared that the purpose of the show was not to create a science fiction world, but rather to show how the pond helped heal a family. She stated: “I think our show is unique because it’s a very traditional multi-generational family drama, but there’s also a pond. It’s there as a tool for healing, a tool to get different perspectives, maybe on a shared tragedy, or to get perspective on a different era of your family and what they went through to come back and bring your own family back together.”

Clarke continued, “That’s the purpose of the pond for us. It was never about why the pond is the way it is. It was more about how the pond can help this family. If we had gone the route of dissecting why the pond is the way it is… it would have been a little too sci-fi. It would also have felt like the wizard revealing his tricks.”

In an interview with VarietyClarke explained, “Once you start to break down what the pond is and why it is the way it is, you let go of the magic and the enigma of it. Our show is not science fiction. Our show is about a time-traveling pond that helps heal a family. Our show is about how the pond can help, not why the pond is.”

In the TV line In an interview, Conkie explained why she and Clarke thought revealing the pond’s origins would ruin its mystery. Conkie said: “It takes away the magic. It makes it too sci-fi to know the origins of the pond. It feels more special if it itself remains a mystery. I guess that’s not our show.”

In the Variety During the interview, Conkie revealed that she and Clarke wanted to leave it to fans to come up with their own theories about where the pond came from. She said: “We need to know that it’s forever. Yes, it was created for a reason, and there could be multiple reasons. No one really wanted to say exactly why the pond is the pond. It’s wonderful for everyone to have their own theory instead of us presenting it to them.”

Although some fans were frustrated by the lack of an answer regarding the pond’s origins in the series finale of The way homeConkie and Clarke’s explanation for why they decided not to reveal it makes sense. The heart of The way home were always his familiesand an explanation for the pond would have delved more into the science fiction genre, something they wanted to avoid. Still, it would have been fascinating to find out how the pond came to be. Instead of, The way home fans can come up with their own theories about how the pond started.
