Hundreds of historic items are set to go up for auction next month as Allen Carr sells a variety of unwanted items His castle in the Scottish Borders. As well as furniture, paintings, books and bronzes, the palace’s unique ‘cement menagerie’ will also be available for sale.
Comedian Alan Carr, who shocked the nation by winning the first series of celebrity traitorreportedly purchased Ayton Castle earlier this year for a whopping £3.25 million, with the renovation of the Scottish estate set to feature in an upcoming documentary series to air on Disney+ later this year.
While the 50-year-old is turning the castle into a home and venue that can be used by the community, he has decided to remove around 400 items from the property. These ‘residual’ items are set to be sold at auction on Sunday, July 5.

with auction Starting at 10am at Ayton Castle, potential buyers will be able to view the contents between 10am and 5pm on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. However, tickets for this event have already been sold out.
talking to BBCJim Railton, of auctioneers Railtons, said: “Basically it’s residual material from Ayton Castle. Alan Carr, as we know, has bought the castle and he’s bought a certain amount of furnishings.
“But those remaining things that he doesn’t want – and that the last owners of the castle don’t want to take to their new home – we’re selling.”
While most of the items are estimated to sell for hundreds of pounds, the most expensive lot is a five-seat 2011 Bentley Mulsanne. With 40,645 record miles and a 6.7 liter engine, this fascinating car is expected to be bought for between £20,000 and £30,000.
Other items included in the auction include a French Louis VI style armory, nineteenth-century oil paintings on canvas, a Victorian mahogany case of taxidermied birds, 52 contemporary upholstered chairs, and a variety of bedding, curtains, rugs and furniture to choose from.
However, a highlight of the auction may be the sale of more than 90 lots of Northumberland folk art creations from the Branxton Cement Menagerie.
Railton says they were built in the 1960s by a retired joiner for the entertainment of his disabled son. which includes painted concrete sculptures of historical figures, Animal and featuring rural scenes, the collection grew to include over 200 pieces.
Describing the menagerie, the auctioneers wrote: “What began as a father’s labor of love became a much-loved visitor attraction, developing a reputation as one of Britain’s most unusual outsider-art collections until its sale and transfer to Ayton in 2021.”
This auction comes as Allen officially Ayton Castle’s doors opened in April. While the comedian has been keeping fans updated about his move to the Scottish castle, he has also invited people to potentially party with him at the property.
Opening up the palace for various celebrations, Allen shared the exciting news Instagram. In the clip, he said: “You may have heard that I bought my own castle… Yes, the rumors are true. The only thing missing is you.”
“Now if you want to let your hair down in one of Scotland’s most beautiful castles, you’re in luck. If you’re celebrating a birthday, any type of celebration, or even a wedding.”
