In Grinch terms: the New York Mets stink, stink, stink. And their now ex-manager is the first to take the blame.
The Mets handed over the manager on Friday morning Carlos Mendoza is walking papers. Mendoza oversaw a Mets ballclub that ranks last in the National League’s Eastern Division. They are 15 games behind first-place Atlanta. To make matters worse, New York is currently in the middle of a six-game losing streak and has a crappy record of just 34-47. Mendoza was in the middle of his third season as Mets skipper.
Less than two seasons after Mendoza led the Mets to the NLCS in his first season as manager, bettors expect the Mets to be far more likely to receive coal than an NLCS title. Polymarket Betting are looking at the Mets trade only 1% to claim the league title.

By comparison, defending champion Dodgers remain far ahead of the competition in terms of bettors. They are trading at 41% to finish the season with an NLCS crown. Not surprisingly, bettors also believe Los Angeles is most likely to win the World Series for the second straight season. LA trades at 30% among Polymarket bettors.
Will the Los Angeles Dodgers win the 2026 World Series?
That seems like a safe bet, considering the Dodgers have an MLB-best 52 wins.
Mets president of baseball operations David Stern released a statement Friday following Mendoza’s firing: “Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is loved by all who work with him on a daily basis. Carlos’ impact on our players, staff and culture over the past three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary moving forward.”
Andy Green will lead the Mets for the rest of the season, starting with Friday night’s action against the Philadelphia Phillies. The first of three games between the division rivals.
