‘Kerry Katona rocks ABBA tribute show – our columnist is a true dancing queen’

Kerry Katona has proven herself every bit the showgirl and a true dancing queen with her lead role in Super Troopers, the ABBA tribute currently making waves in the UK ☆☆☆☆☆

Kerry Katona has been one of Britain’s most famous women for almost 30 years now. The 45-year-old star rose to fame as part of Atomic Kitten, who became famous For their signature track Hole Again in the late 1990s.

Despite still being a regular at Butlins and nightclubs, I think it’s fair to say that, to most people, Carey is better known these days as a media personality rather than a pop star.

with I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!dancing on ice, and celebrity big brother With everything she’s been subjected to – as well as a series of biographies and reality shows detailing her dramatic personal life – it’s possible some people may have forgotten where it all began for Carey.

But I didn’t – and that’s why I was thrilled to get the chance to see Kerry, who Writes a weekly column for our sister publication New! magazineIn Super Troopers, which pays homage to the famous Swedish pop group ABBA and their jukebox musical Mamma Mia!

When I first started in showbiz journalism, Kerry was one of the people I most wanted to interview, and I’ve been lucky enough to talk to her a few times, but I’ve never been able to see her live. As I took my seat at the fire station in Sunderland, there was certainly a stir among the crowd waiting for the show to start and, soon I and the rest of the audience were out of our seats and on our feet.

As the curtain rose, a group of esteemed West End professionals known as Carey’s Super Troopers stormed the stage with a crowd-pleasing rendition of I Have a Dream, all dressed in ABBA-esque costumes, and then launched into Money Money Money.

Halfway through the track, to the audience’s delight, Carey came on stage and introduced herself as Kerry “Car Crash” Katona, instantly winning over everyone.

What followed was a spectacular two-hour hit after another, in which Carey led performances of Mamma Mia!, Dancing Queen and, a personal highlight for me, Super Trooper, in which she perfectly impersonated Meryl Streep as Donna Sheridan and sang of a life, literally, in the spotlight.

But its absolute charm was that none of it was taken seriously and Carey made several jokes about her multiple divorces, cheekily changing some of the lyrics to make the audience laugh and encouraging us all to join in with the dance moves.

Other memorable moments include Carey’s rendition of Does Your Mother Know, which she dedicated to her partner Paolo Margaglione, as well as barnstorming performances of classics like SOS, Gimme! Give it to me! Give it to me! (A Man After Midnight), and Voulez-Vous.

However, for me, credit for the performance of the night goes to Ella McCready, who gave a brilliant performance of The Winner Takes It All to an almost never-ending applause that would be hard for anyone to follow.

But so did they, and Carey and the cast returned to perform more tracks from the group’s back catalogue, all culminating in an encore of Waterloo, more than 50 years after the classic song featured and won the Eurovision Song Contest.

I’d be surprised if anyone in that audience walked away without a smile on their face. Kerry and her Super Troopers gave everyone an ABBA-like night out at a time when some would say the country needed it most. So, there’s really only one thing left to say: Kerry, thanks for the music.

Kerry Katona’s Super Troopers will play at various venues across the UK until 5 July. Tickets are available here.
