“Rebels and anti-heroes are just fun for me”

Looking back on his first day on set, Momoa said it all clicked the moment he climbed onto the space pig and rode in for his introductory scene.

“Fireballs going off, chaos, and you throw the hook. It was… I mean, it’s surreal,” he said. “When you put on the whole outfit, like everyone’s looking at me and you just kind of… it’s crazy because you’re like, ‘Lobo is standing in front of me.’ It’s full.”

The actor was candid about why Lobo appeals to him in a way that more traditional heroes don’t.

“I just think the rebels and the anti-heroes are just fun for me. I love Superman, I love the worlds and stuff like that, but that’s not someone I would play. I love playing a character like this; he’s just a threat. It’s just fun to play those kinds of roles,” he said.

Describing what makes Lobo tick, Momoa said the character operates according to his own moral code, even if it is flexible.

“He’s 100% an anti-hero, but I think he is in everything. He has a code, and it’s a pretty slick code in some sections, but there are clauses in that code. He’s wrong and he’s right, but he’s a bounty hunter, man. Like he’s going to punch you in the face. He’s going to fight you. That’s why I love him,” he said.

Momoa said the role came naturally because he already understood the character so deeply. “(Lobo was) very easy to get into because I’m a fan. I wasn’t a fan of Aquaman. I think you have to put in that work. I think I’ve been an absolute fan of Lobo since I was a kid,” he said.

“I was really surprised when I put on all this stuff, and you got everything, and you looked in the mirror and then walked onto the set, how much came out that I just didn’t know.”

“And I only had a certain number of scenes, but with each scene I got to see him in different situations and how he would deal with them, and it was really interesting what would come out. And I feel like I was in prison, it was like my last scene, and crazy things came out where you were like, okay, well, let’s go.”

On Thursday, Momoa was joined by his two children, daughter Lola, 18, and son Nakoa-Wolf, 17, at a fan event for Great girl in London, said People.

Both children are from his marriage to actress Lisa Bonet; the couple finalized their divorce in 2024.
