A young woman in Brazil tragically died this weekend after what authorities and witnesses said was a devastating safety lapse during a bungee jumping excursion. And adding another heartbreaking layer to an already horrific incident, the terrifying moment was captured on video by bystanders who watched the jump unfold.
According to several media reports from Brazil, 21 years old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas had signed up for what would be an adrenaline-filled adventure at the Ponte do Esqueletoalso known as Skeleton bridgein Limeira, Sao Paulo. Instead, the outing ended in unimaginable tragedy.

According to multiple Brazilian news outlets, witnesses say Maria Eduarda was escorted to the edge of the bridge by bungee jumping company employees before being thrown over the edge. But almost immediately, something seemed terribly wrong: Footage circulating on social media showed onlookers realizing the safety rope had been left behind instead of being attached to the young woman before the jump.
Serious.
One witness who filmed the event reportedly pointed to the rope still on the ground and screamed in horror as the reality of the situation became clear.

Authorities say Maria Eduarda fell about 40 meters. Emergency services, including a police helicopter, were sent to the scene, but she was unfortunately pronounced dead.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the community and among those who knew her. Maria Eduarda had just graduated in physical education and sports management and had reportedly purchased a tour package that included the jump from the abandoned bridge – but what was meant to be a celebration has now turned tragic.

The legal fallout is already underway. Per The mirror and others, authorities confirmed that six people have been questioned in connection with the incident. Three men were reportedly arrested at the scene and charged with murder with implied malice.
Investigators are investigating whether the operation was conducted properly and whether safety procedures were followed. One researcher, representative Andrea Dantas Levyoffered a blunt assessment of the situation to the Brazilian media:
“It was a team there that wasn’t regulated; they didn’t even have permission to be there. Ultimately, they organized this event, and this fatal accident happened today, in my opinion, as a result of not verifying and controlling the placement of the rope on the victim’s jump.”
Meanwhile, local officials are also demanding answers. Limeira City Council is reportedly taking action following the tragedy Murilo Felix criticized what he described as long-standing security problems around the area.
As he said:
“It is necessary to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to a federal territory that has posed known risks for years and still lacks the necessary protective measures.”
