Tim Allen explains why the ‘home improvement’ resurgence is stalling

Tim Allen still want to bring home improvement return, but bringing the Taylor family back together may be easier said than done.

The actor has spent years talking about the possibility of a revival of the hit comedy, which ran from 1991 to 1999 and helped turn Allen and his on-screen children into stars. But according to Allen, there are some major obstacles along the way.

The biggest problems involve children

In a recent talk with Us weeklyAllen explained that discussions about a Home Improvement revival continue, but the project continues to run into problems when it comes to the actors who played his children on television.

“They keep talking about how they could move forward, but they get stuck (because) there are some personality issues with the kids right now,” Allen said, adding that “they have their own issues.”

Allen admitted that he always thought it would be great if a revival focused on children, but acknowledged that is proving difficult right now.

I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.

Allen previously suggested that a reboot could focus on the next generation of the Taylor family.

talking to Entertainment Weekly in 2024, he the idea floated from a series focused on children’s children.

“It’s funny, one of the conversations we’ve had recently is how strange it would be if home improvement It would be about children’s children,” Allen said at the time. “Like everyone has children and I’m a grandfather. Home re-improvement or something.”

Where is the original cast today?

Part of the challenge is that the actors who played Randy, Brad and Mark have taken very different paths since the series ended.

Jonathan Taylor-Thomas He largely stepped away from acting years ago and has focused more on writing and directing. Taran Noah Smith He also left acting after the series ended.

Meanwhile, Zachery Ty Bryan has faced several legal problems in recent years. He is currently serving a 16-month prison sentence in California and, in March, was sentenced to an additional 19 months in Oregon after admitting to three violations of his probation.

Not everyone has been on board

Even among the adult cast, enthusiasm for a revival hasn’t always been unanimous.

Patricia Richardsonwho played Tim’s wife, Jill Taylor, previously rejected the idea of the cast being completely behind a reunion.

Talking about the Back to the best On the 2024 podcast, Richardson said she was surprised to hear Allen speak publicly about a revival because she had not been contacted about it.

It was so strange. I heard him come out publicly and say things about everyone being on board to have a Home Improvement meeting, but he never asked me, and he never asked Jonathan.

Richardson also pointed out some of the practical challenges facing any reboot effort, noting that several cast members have stopped acting altogether.

“I mean, Zach is a criminal now,” he said. “Taran hasn’t acted since he left the show; he’s no longer an actor. And Jonathan isn’t really interested in acting. He wants to direct and write. And we don’t have Wilson.”

This last point refers to Earl Hindmanwho played the beloved neighbor whose face was hidden behind a fence throughout the series. Hindman died in 2003.

For now, Allen seems interested in revisiting the world of home improvement. However, it remains a much more important question whether all the pieces can fit together.
