Netflix cancels popular drama series after one season despite praise

In recent years Netflix has become infamous for pulling the plug TV programs that failed to connect with viewers or were savaged by critics. However, one of the streaming giant’s recent cancellations seemed to go against everything subscribers expect from the company. After the series became one of the company’s “most-watched” shows and was almost universally praised, Netflix suddenly canceled it.

Netflix canceled Boots after just one season

On December 15, 2025, Term reported that Netflix was canceled Bootsa military coming-of-age comedy-drama. The series is adapted from the memoir “The Pink Marine” by Greg Cope White and executive produced by one of the greatest legends in television history, Norman Lear. It was the last series that Lear helped bring to the world before passing away in 2023. The show’s first and only season consisted of eight episodes that premiered on October 9, 2025.

Boots was a series that followed Miles Heizer as Cameron Cope, a closeted teen who joins the United States Marine Corps during the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” era in the 1990s. The formerly bullied young man finds unexpected brotherhood while dealing with the pressures of boot camp.

Boots was one of Netflix’s most watched series

After Boots was canceled by Netflix, Term published an article detailing how strong the series’ viewership numbers were before it was axed. The outlet noted that it was “was number 23 on the list of most watched series in the period July-December with 30.7 million viewsWhile that fact alone made the show’s cancellation surprising, there’s some important context that makes it even more remarkable.

Considering the sheer number of shows Netflix users can choose from, being in the company’s top 25 over a six-month period is already a huge deal. However, Boots’ The achievement was even more remarkable because the film premiered on October 9, 2025. As a result, the film was not even watchable for just over half of the qualifying period.

The outlet further noted this Boots outperformed several renewed series in Netflix’s “most-watched” shows rankings for the period. For example, the second season of the romantic comedy series Kristen Bell and Adam Brody Nobody wants this was at number 24. Below that was The witcher Season 4 ranked at number 29 and season 3 of it The diplomat was at number 41.

Boots was loved by critics and fans

It often feels like shows can be a hit with viewers or critics, but not both. However, Boots managed to be embraced by these two groups during its short eight-episode run.

From the viewer’s point of view, Boots currently has a Popcornmeter score of 90% Rotten Tomatoes based on more than 500 reviews from users of the website. Additionally, several articles detailed how upset fans were after the series’ early ending was announced, including that of The TV Cave And Cheerfulness. Even months later, fans are still posting on social media about how upset they are. For example, on June 25, 2026, a user wrote: ‘I still can’t believe they canceled the show Boots. It was so damn good 🙁 I’m angry.”

Critics also embraced the series as it has a 90% Tomatometer score Rotten Tomatoes based on more than 40 professional reviews. It was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award, a GLAAD Media Award, and the won a Queerties Award for Best TV Comedy. An October 2025 Looper review epitomized how critics celebrated the series when it labeled it “energetic, hilarious and heartwarmingly emotionalThe outlet rated the “surprisingly poignant and emotional” show a nine out of ten, praising it as a series that “rises above and beyond for its emotional yet funny approach to admittedly serious material.”

Netflix’s CEO has addressed the Boots cancellation controversy

Considering that Boots was a hit by several metrics, the fact that it was quietly canceled sparked outrage among some observers. That left many fans wondering about the motivation behind the programming decision, with some concluding that it could have been caused by political considerations. That’s because the United States Department of War has issued a statement about this called the series “woke garbage” in October 2025.

When Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos attended the Directors Guild of America Awards in February 2026, Variety Marc Malkin asked him if that statement gave cause Boots to cancel. In response to this Netflix’s boss categorically denied that this was the case. “Absolutely not. These are all business decisions based on the audience versus the cost of the show. Are the people pushing the game watching to the end? Do they give a few thumbs up? Does it continue to grow? All those things. That decision is made every day.”

Sarandos went on to comment on his personal feelings about Boots and fan reaction to its cancellation. “The great thing about why people get upset when you cancel a show is because they love them. That’s the best thing about our company, is that people really love the product. And it’s heartbreaking to cancel any show, especially a show that Norman Lear brought to me. It was his last show. I loved that show. I’m a fan.”
