A devastating update on Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance was provided on June 22, 2026, prompting an emotional on-air reaction from her daughter, Savannah Guthrie. Nancy has been missing since February 1 and two ransom notes were sent shortly after from her alleged kidnappers. The first one asked for millions in bitcoins. The second note was sent on February 6 and previously not much was known about it. Now, NBC News reports that the note stated that Nancy had died.
one of the sketchy things about nancy’s kidnapping was that the second note did not ask for a ransom, but rather that the kidnappers expressed regret for his death. Unfortunately, Savannah and her family believed the veracity of the second note, which revealed that her mother was dead, as investigators confirmed that it was sent from the same IP address as the initial ransom note.
After news broke about the content of the second note, Savannah issued a heartbreaking plea in “Today.” The NBC personality made it clear that he was not covering the story, but was appearing in his personal capacity. “I just want to take the opportunity to ask people, really beg them to come forward,” she said through tears. Savannah made it clear that she and the family were desperate to find her mother’s body to give closure. “And we are in agony. We cannot be at peace,” he said.
Savannah explained why she stayed on “Today” even after the crushing news was revealed. “We’re begging for your help and I’m not going to miss that opportunity,” he told the camera. “Please do the right thing for us, for our family, for our children. We love our mother and we will never stop looking for her,” Savannah added. That, of course, wasn’t the first emotional plea Savannah made after Nancy’s kidnapping.
Savannah Guthrie hinted that she knew Nancy Guthrie was dead
A month before the contents of the second note became public, Savannah Guthrie had an emotional moment on “Today.” In May, Savannah left “Today” early. but it was unknown if it was directly related to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. At that point, co-host Craig Melvin offered a vague explanation to viewers. “Savannah had to leave a little early. She’ll be back here tomorrow, though,” Melvin told the audience (via Page six).
Savannah’s abrupt departure from the NBC daytime show coincided with a A heartbreaking milestone in the search for Nancy. That was around the time the investigation reached day 100. At that time, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement. “Advances in technology are assisting investigative efforts, and leads continue to be received and reviewed,” authorities said in May, according to Us weekly. “Even small details can be significant,” the statement added.
Before that, Savannah had made public statements through videos posted on instagram. On February 7, the day after the note stating that Nancy had died had been received, Savannah posted a video directed at the kidnappers. “We beg you now to give us our mother back. So we can celebrate with her,” she said, sitting next to her siblings. “This is the only way we can have peace,” Savannah added. Obviously, when the public learned the content of the second note, they recontextualized Savannah’s message.
Later that month, Savannah posted a single instagram video, where he began to accept the fact that Nancy may no longer be alive. “We also know that she may be lost… She may have already returned home to the Lord she loves,” Savannah said in the tearful message.
