Rita Moreno is a Hollywood pioneer, becoming the first Latina to achieve EGOT status at a time when actors of Latin American descent were barely accepted. She proved to have the talent and charisma needed to conquer the American public. But not all of her roles became fan favorites. Her guest appearances on “The Rockford Files” even completely ruined the episodes she was in for some. In the hit ’70s NBC detective drama, Moreno played the recurring character of Rita Capkovic, a sweet sex worker who sometimes acted as a police informant.
There are many reasons why fans took issue with the talkative character, ranging from vague annoyance to issues with her characterization. “She’s overbearing and way too needy,” said one Facebook user wrote in a post from February 2026. Another had a more specific concern related to the ongoing issue of the way violence against women is portrayed in films and series. Referring to a scene in season 6, episode 8, in which Moreno’s character goes to Jim Rockford’s trailer after being severely beaten by her pimp, a second Facebook user pointed out how the scene romanticized the violent act.
“He helps her with her bruises and kisses her and says, ‘give me a kiss.’ That seemed so inappropriate at the time. Really strange for a woman to be beaten up like that,” said the internet user argued. Others agreed that the violence against Rita Capkovic was at odds with the overall atmosphere of the show. “(It) added a dark feel to the otherwise comedic feel of ‘Rockford,’” another user wrote. The character may have had issues with a modern lens, but Moreno received high praise for her acting.

Many modern users may have rightly objected to the way the sex worker and her storyline were portrayed. But Rita Capkovic was well received by fans of “The Rockford Files” at the time. At least, that’s the impression Rita Moreno had. “People said to me, ‘I love that character, you should make a series about her.’ … People loved her so much that they forgot she was a whore,” she shared Variety in 2016. The critics clearly liked it too. In 1978, Moreno won an Emmy for his guest role on “The Rockford Files.”
While there may be issues today, the old-school Hollywood star was praised at the time for bringing depth to a character who could have easily fallen into the stereotypical trope of the sex worker with a heart of gold. That’s what Moreno always wanted to do with her characters, as the actor was known for refusing stereotypical roles. That’s why it took so long for her to get another movie role after starring in “West Side Story.”
Despite winning an Oscar for the film, Moreno was still only presented with stereotypical Latina characters. Her TV roles gave her the freedom to show off her wide range. “One of the nicest things (about ‘Rockford’) is that they let me improvise here and there,” she told Variety. And while some modern viewers hate her role, others agree with Moreno. “She’s phenomenal. The character would be a bit ‘too much’, but also a sweet person,” said one Facebook person. user defended in 2024.
